Here’s a peek into what is lined up for the day:
Overcoming fear of failure, Erik Johansson
Swedish photographer and retoucher Erik Johansson creates impossible pictures, capturing not moments but ideas. While some ideas succeed, there are many obstacles in the path from planning and shooting to retouching the final artwork that challenge the artistic process. Erik will reflect on how problem solving is a large aspect of his work, but more importantly, how failure drives success and stimulates creativity.
Blurring the Boundaries of Typography, Illustration and Art, Gemma O’Brien
After studying a Bachelor of Design at the College of Fine Arts Sydney, Gemma O’Brien was interested in finding a space to work, primarily with typography, outside the traditional constructs of design. Over the last five years she developed a multi-faceted practice that attempts to balance the commercial with the creative, merge craft with concept and embraces a variety of techniques such as illustration, calligraphy and large-scale typographic murals. Along the way, various forms of fear – procrastination, creative block, self-doubt, comparing one’s work with others, overthinking and perfectionism – have emerged in her creative process. In her presentation, Gemma will discuss how she managed these setbacks within different commercial projects and how over time she has started using fear to fuel bolder, better work.
On the Edge, Jason Little
To be a designer is to perpetually sit between failure and success – so how do you reach a creative balance? How do you find purpose and meaning in a job rife with rejection and inner struggles? What happens when your work doesn’t match the aspirations you have for it, and how can you help yourself to overcome obstacles to reach creative fulfilment? Jason Little, designer and co-founder of the recent creative start-up, For The People will share why he created the studio, For The People, and what led him to throw away everything in order to start again.
